Why a Great Headhunter Needs an Understanding Partner

Why a Great Headhunter Needs an Understanding Partner My wife, Senda, is an amazing woman. Hey, she’d have to be to put up with my nonsense. Today though, she said something to me that showed that not only had she been married to me for a long time, not only does she know me so well, but she is the wife of a head hunter. That she understands what I do for a living. When I first started this job, way back in 1998, business was hot. I was a 20 something kid, making money hand over fist while learning the job at the same time. It was a good time to be in information technology recruiting. If you had a heart beat, took a course on COBOL in 1979 in Leningrad, Beijing or the CHUBB institute and had once worked for longer than 3 months in Financial Services, there was an opportunity for you. On top of that, there was commission in it for me. Business was so hot that I was making calls after 7:30pm from home. Senda was not pleased… “Jeff, you are at your desk at 7:30am. You don’t get home until 7pm. Then, you eat dinner, flirt with me for 10 minutes, and get back on the phone! I need more of your time!” I replied very simply. “Sen. If I told you that a 30 minute call was a 50/50 shot of making $6000 would you do it?” I think everyone of us head hunters understands that, and she got it, too. Flash forward 15 years. I just tried a job for 6 months recruiting a different line of business. It was all virtual which I loved, in theory. I am a 1960s hippie at heart. I hate dress pants (Heck, like Homer Simpson, I plain hate all pants!) I hate office politics. I hate time vampires that every office has. Plus, I have been known to be a Time Vampire and I didn’t want to suck anyone else down with me. After 6 months of it, I loved my firm and the people I worked with but the money wasn’t there. In addition, the LOB had a much slower turn-around time than I was used to, and I missed the excitement of IT. Senda and I sat down and talked about it. I did what I always tell my candidates to do. Make a T-Square, write down everything, from money to quality of life and compare. Then make a decision. Suffice to say, I called my contacts and I am now back in an office, having fun, and just scheduled my first interview after only 6 business days here. So, I have to wear dress slacks… It happens. Cut to this Morning. NYC is rainy and humid at the same time, as NY weather gets sometimes. I have a chance to land a major account today… and that means putting on a suit. The only thing I hate more than wearing pants is going whole hog, and putting on the suit and tie. Not only is it uncomfortable, it isn’t me. I never feel quite right. I began whining to Senda. “Boo-hoo-hoo, I hate wearing a suit. I hate this aspect of the business” Senda grabs my shoulders, looks me in the eye, and pretty much repeats back to me what I said to her 15 years ago about night calls… Even better, she hits my Hot Buttons! “Jeff,” She says, “If one day of wearing a suit puts more money in Max’s (our 3 year old) College fund and pays for a trip to Harry Potter World, then wear the suit for a 50/50 shot of winning the client. I’d do it” That is what we do for a living. We often find our job to be feast or famine. Our commission checks vary from month to month. When you get so frustrated you say, “Forget this, I am going to go sell cars!” and then that Friday get a comp check of a 5 digit number. Like Michael Corleone, “Every time you think you’re out, they pull you back in”. This is the business we have chosen. From night calls to slacks at the end of the day, we do what we need to do. Having a friend and partner who understands this makes it all the better.

Life Admin Its Time To Get Organized

Life Admin Its Time To Get Organized Now that the fall season is in full swing,   everyone seems to be looking towards the festive season already. People will be writing lists, making plans, and before you know it, you’ll be heading into the new year. January is often a time of reflection over the last twelve months, and people appreciate, question, and analyze what they’ve done, achieved, or where they feel theyve failed. It’s also often a time of new approaches and plans, whether that’s to do with relationships, careers, or lifestyle choices. However, it’s far enough into the year now to consider if you’re stuck in a rut or if you’re happy with how things are going. The pre-festive season is also the perfect chance to get your life a little bit more organized so that you can sail through winter and the new year feeling confident and focused on the months ahead. A great place to start is with your life admin.   Thats those little tasks that surround your job, finances, accommodation, and future that often people put-off until the point things crucially need addressing. It’s the little admin tasks that can also make a major difference to your happiness and development, so it’s worth taking some time this coming weekend, grabbing a spiced latte, and surrounding yourself with paperwork, websites, a notebook, and a pen. The following are some tips, advice, and ideas, for those who want to organize the boring stuff this fall, so their Christmas and New Year is exciting and bright. Money Management You might be thinking that saving your money in the coming months is going to be a pretty difficult challenge, especially with party season and the tradition of gift-giving. However, it can be done. Making a few changes to your everyday habits will ensure that you’re able to put money aside, and perhaps save for that vacation you’ll be craving come January. Now is the time to get a spreadsheet up on your computer screen, grab your notebook, and start writing exactly what you’re spending each day, week, and month so that you can see where you’re able to cut back and save. Youll also understand how much extra income you’ll be able to squirrel-away during fall and winter (and beyond). Make sure that you include each expense.    You can break your spreadsheet up into days, and each day by hour. Start with an average month, and then continue with specific expenditures, like dining out, retail therapy, and entertainment.   You’ll be able to spot patterns straight away, which will assist in making changes. Once you have everything you can remember in your spreadsheet regarding your spending habits, you’ll want to add the income from your job or calculate working hours to see how much you’ll be earning for the rest of the year. Take into account any overtime, or periods where you’ll be able to take on extra work, or won’t be able to take on as much. Compare your income to your outgoings, ensure that you start saving the excess, and begin working out the ways to save even more. Once you’ve worked out how much is leaving your bank account, and worked out how many of those lattes you really need to buy in the week, you’ll need to look at bigger expenses.   Your cable, internet, and phone bills can play a huge role in how much you have leftover at the end of the   month and could be putting more pressure on your finances than needed. Therefore, you’ll need to gather together each of your monthly bills, and each provider, and work out if you can get a better deal elsewhere.   The chances are that you can, at least on a couple of them, if not more. Remember that businesses are competing for you to do business with them. Therefore, you should think twice about searching elsewhere online for a more affordable, and better deal. There are plenty of price comparison sites, and it’ll take a little time to sift through your options.   However, it’ll be worth the effort when youre saving hundreds over the course of the year (and can justify more trips to the coffee shop). You may want to consider the biggest drains on your income and think about changing them too. Perhaps your rent or the cost of running your car means that you’re left with very little monthly.   Think about changing your vehicle, or downsizing your accommodation so that you can save for those things in the future. Creating Extra Money You’ll probably be feeling pretty great about the money that you’re able to save.    Well, you can give yourself even more of a boost and organize a little more income. Life admin doesnt just have to be about paperwork and bills; you can re-organize your home environment and give yourself a clear mind and fresh start in time for the new year. Take a weekend to go through your belongings and see what you have that you don’t utilize anymore. Throw yourself a yard sale, or use an online auction site to bring in some extra cash. You could even use your social media platforms to advertise things and sell in your local area. You’ll be killing two birds with one stone; you’ll have extra money coming in to save or spend as you wish, and your living space will be a tidy and organized environment full of items that you use. There’s no better time to think about that creative side and perhaps selling what you’ve made, or a service you can provide people to bring in more income. Write down what you could do and when you could do it.   You can have fun in the meantime at local markets and events where people will be enthusiastic to put their money your way. Taking some of your time to sort through your life admin might not be top of your to-do list, but organizing things now will be a weight off your shoulders and the rest of the year will look far more appealing.   Not to mention the boost you’ll get for the new year ahead.

3 Ways To Answer When Can You Start - Algrim.co

3 Ways To Answer When Can You Start - Algrim.co Interviewers are going to ask you, “When can you start?” or “What’s the date you’re available for work?” Here’s the great news about this question being asked of you by the interviewer or HR manager, it means that most likely you got the job. There are many times during interviews that we aren’t exactly sure whether or not the job will be given to you. There could have been signs that the interview went poorly and then there could be signs the interview went well. This question is one of the signs that the interview went well. Usually this question is asked in anticipation of a job offer being accepted. In your employment agreement, which is normally sent by the HR department head or your manager directly, it will contain a start date. So in order for the company to get you a contract to sign, they need to know the answer to this question. It can be difficult to answer this question because you might be thinking to yourself that you have to leave your other job first. Or maybe that you want some times off before you begin the new position. Or maybe that after interviewing, you really aren’t interested in this position and you want to withdraw yourself from the interview. All three of those reasons are incredibly valid. But we have to navigate this interview question with those factors in mind. When You Are Interested In The Position And Want To Start Right Away If you want to start right away, then you’ll first have to consider how soon you can leave your last job. You’ll want to provide them at least two weeks notice so that you don’t burn a bridge. And you’ll also want to make sure you are available to the new employer for any training or onboarding that they may want to do with you. Using vacation or sick days can help you at your current role. And be sure that you sign your employment agreement with the new company before you put in your two-weeks notice at your last position. This will help to make sure that nothing goes wrong in the hiring process with the new company before you quit your other job. An example answer when these factors are the case would be: I’m interested in starting right away. This job is the utmost of importance to me. I do have a prior commitment with my old position. But I would like to sign the employment agreement with you as soon as possible, set a date that’s most convenient for your team and then ensure that I am here. That will be my highest priority. By giving this answer you can flip the script a little bit and the employer will let you know when they want you available for the position. Then your goal will be to leave your other position gracefully and transition smoothly. When You Want To Take Some Time Off Before You Start Your New Position If you want to start this position but you need a little time to take “a breather” in between your positions, then there’s a way you can gracefully handle this. Explain to the new employer that you have a vacation planned. Don’t tell them that you’d like to take a vacation before you begin, unfortunately, that won’t look the best. And may make you seem a little arrogant. You don’t need to share every personal detail of your life. Just explain that you have a vacation planned and that you’d like to start afterward. The way to do this is by saying the following: “I have a vacation planned in the short-term here, I’d like to start right after that. It wouldn’t be any more than 3 weeks from now. I’d like to get back to you this evening by email on a few possible start dates and see if that works for you and the rest of the team. How does that sound?” In that example we are direct, we say that we need a little more time to prepare when the best start dates are. And we do this all without sounding arrogant or not interested in the position as a whole. When You Aren’t Sure The Position Is Right For You If after interviewing you are starting to feel like the position might not be right for you but the interviewer wants to proceed anyway, then you’ll want to gracefully start to remove yourself from the process. There are two ways that you can handle this. You can be utterly honest and upfront about how you are feeling and say something like, “I’m extremely honored that it sounds like you’d like to proceed with the opportunity of employing me. Though, after the interviews, I am needing some more time to reflect on the conversations and see if this position is right for me.” You can say this as your answer to “When can you start?” because it is honest, to the point and the interviewer will understand. You are being genuine. The second way to handle this is to be a little more evasive. Some people aren’t comfortable with small degrees of confrontation. That’s okay. If that is you, then you can simply say that you’d like to get back to the interviewer at a later date regarding when you can start. And then later that evening you can write a letter on withdrawing yourself from the interview process all together. An example answer for that would be: “I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity. And it sounds like you may want to proceed with my employment. Can I get back to you this evening by email one when the best start date would be.” What The Interviewer Wants To Know With this question the interviewer really is looking for a tactical answer. Yes, they may be looking at your body language and determining your interest in the position from it. So if you are genuinely interested in being employed by this company, be sure that you are showing enthusiasm when giving your answer. If you are in need of a little more time in order to get your answer together, explain to the interviewer that it is only because you don’t have your calendar in front of you and that you don’t know about any personal commitments or work commitments that may conflict with your start date. That level of honesty is going to go along way. Try to avoid creating large lies that are going to bubble and make it difficult for you to establish a good relationship with your new employer. Tips On Answering “How soon can you start?” The best way to answer this question is to be honest, be open and communicate with enthusiasm. Know that you have the opportunity to be employed by this company and they are looking to proceed to the last level of the job interview process with you. Be grateful, be sincere and if you need more time in order to answer the question, you can always say that. Try to avoid long answers that contain a lot of personal details of your life. For example, you don’t want to be explaining that you have plans with your friend Chrissy and that you and her oftentimes don’t come to an agreement over the date and time of when you meet. You don’t need to explain these details. Be crystal clear with your answer and keep the HR managers needs in mind, they need this question answered in order to get you an employment agreement or contract.

Should Writing Samples Are Printed on Resume Paper?

Should Writing Samples Are Printed on Resume Paper? If you are a writer, then having to answer this question will come as quite an unwelcome surprise. Writing samples can be printed on resume paper but should not be done. Here are some reasons why.The first reason is that printing writing samples on resume paper is very damaging to the writers' credibility. There are professionals and experienced writers who do not like this practice. Writers like these, who are not accustomed to it, tend to be a little harsh. They do not get involved in such practices of writing samples being printed on resume paper and tend to think that such practices are only used by writers who don't have any practice in writing. Also, you must understand that the resume paper along with the written samples can not just be copied without any difference. It would not be true to say that the writers could paste what they have written on their resume paper. This is where it gets tricky because you do not want to pres ent your resume paper with no difference. The second reason is that the writing samples should never be printed on resume paper. You need to understand that the writer needs to apply his or her professional skills in order to write a resume. A resume can never be printed with just any writing sample. There are specific guidelines to be followed when choosing the writing samples for printing on resume paper. For example, if you are using writing samples printed on resume paper as a criterion to decide which writer to hire for a certain position, then it will also be noticed that the writer has always employed writing samples printed on resume paper. That means that the writer does not use resume paper to write the resume. Then why should you buy the writing samples? And the third reason is that if the writer uses written samples printed on resume paper as a criteria for hiring him or her, it will also give the impression that the writer has no other option but to hire the writers who us e resume paper to write resumes. In fact, you might have just hired a very cheap writer! It doesn't seem fair to you that the job went to cheap writers! Instead of hiring cheap writers, it is better that you ask for the best writers from your network.Last but not the least reason is that using writing samples printed on resume paper to decide which writer to hire for a particular position, is also not going to help your search efforts. It will just add more time to your search efforts. As soon as you get a candidate who actually fits what you are looking for, then you can make your decision. But if you do not have a candidate, then how will you know what's best for you?And finally, using writing samples printed on resume paper will only create more confusion than confusion. Your resume paper needs to present a clear picture so that it can be read and understood easily.

Avoid lifelong regrets by moving towards your ideal career - Hallie Crawford

Avoid lifelong regrets by moving towards your ideal career One of the best ways to clarify what you want most from your career, your  education, and your life is to ask yourself, “If I were at the end of my life  looking back on it, what regrets would I have?” Teens and young people  have difficulty answering this question because, for the most part, they are still in  the phase of life where they see themselves as immortal. By your twenties and  thirties or later, however, if you find yourself answering that you would regret not  pursuing a specific career or a specific education, you can ignore your answer, but  your desire for it will not end. Your desire will haunt you like a ghost in your heart until you do pursue it. Some studies about regrets show that having a fender bender or spilling your  beverage are not the kind of regrets that bother people long-term. The regrets that bother people the most are the ones that are irreversible like not spending more  time with your children who are now grown, not spending more time with your  parents who are now dead, and not pursuing a love interest that is no longer  available. Not pursuing a career or education are among the lifelong regrets that  bother people as well. The advantage of knowing about this study is that you can make decisions now to  avoid regrets later. If you already know what you would regret, pursue your dreams  if for no other reason, so you can die happy without major regrets! If you need any incentive to overcome obstacles to your dreams, here are  some words of  inspiration: Until one is committed there is hesitancy, a chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness…. The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that never otherwise would have occurred. W. H.
